Torres del Avellano is a remote granite massif rising above the north shore of General Carrera Lake, in Chilean Patagonia's Aysén region. Guías del Avellano offers the only guided 3-day trek to this destination, departing from Bahía Murta on the Carretera Austral. Scheduled departures run October to March, with open groups of maximum 7 people. Fully guided. All-inclusive except sleeping bag, sleeping mat, and personal flights.

We get asked this a lot. Here's a straight answer.

If you can hike 6–8 hours with a daypack on consecutive days, you can do Torres del Avellano. No technical climbing. No ropes. No glacier crossing. The trail is unmarked and remote — but you will have two certified guides with you at all times.

What happens on trail

Three days. No signal. No crowds. The summit view on Day 2 makes the whole thing worth it.

Access & first camp

Transfer from Bahía Murta to the trailhead. You enter through native lenga beech forest, cross the first river, and work your way up to the base camp plateau above General Carrera Lake. That night, the massif is right in front of you.

The towers

The summit day. A 3–4 hour climb brings you face to face with the granite towers — massive, vertical, and almost completely off the map. Most people who reach this point say it's the best day of the trip. Descent back to camp in the afternoon.

Before you decide

Do the guides speak English?
Vicente and Andrés communicate primarily in Spanish. Their trail English covers all safety and logistics on the route. For booking inquiries, we use translation tools — your message will be fully understood. International travelers from England and the US have completed this trek without issue.
What fitness level do I need?
If you can hike 6–8 hours with a daypack on consecutive days, you qualify. No technical climbing, no ropes, no glacier crossing. 42 km over 3 days, 1,600 m total elevation gain on unmarked terrain. If you have doubts, write before booking — we will give you an honest answer.
How do I get to Bahía Murta from abroad?
Fly into Balmaceda Airport (BBA) from Santiago (~2h on LATAM or Sky Airline), then take a bus or private transfer to Bahía Murta (~3h). Bahía Murta is on the Carretera Austral, on the north shore of General Carrera Lake. Once you book, we help you sort out how to get here.
Can I join as a solo traveler?
Yes. Scheduled departures are open groups — solo travelers, couples, and small groups share the same departure, up to 7 people total. People tend to connect on trail without needing much help. If you want the whole departure to yourself, check out our private departures.
What if the weather is bad?
You choose between a full refund or free rescheduling — no penalties, no fine print. We're the ones who decide if it's safe to go, and we take that seriously. Four seasons in this specific valley means we know when the weather is manageable and when it isn't.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
You'll need a sleeping bag rated to at least -5°C (23°F) and a sleeping mat. Neither is included, but both are available to rent in Bahía Murta — just let us know when you book and we'll sort it out. If you're flying carry-on only, renting locally is the obvious move.
